Registration

Each of the different registration steps in Freja has its own section below. Check the section that is relevant to you.

Connect your email to Freja

Enter your email address in the app and we’ll send you a confirmation link. You can confirm via your phone or your browser.
If you can’t find the confirmation email, try checking your spam folder.

Create a PIN

Create your own PIN in Freja and be sure to remember it. You will use it to access Freja and approve actions in the app.
You can use biometrics, but they are optional and your PIN will always be there as a backup.

Frequent questions we get about the email and PIN:

I’m not receiving my PIN code

We don’t send PIN codes, you must set your PIN code yourself.

What if I forget my PIN?

If you enter your PIN incorrectly 3 times, Freja will lock and you will be able to reset it through the app. If this has happened to you, go to Settings and choose ‘Reset PIN’.

Can I use my phone’s biometrics instead of the PIN?

Yes, however you must set a PIN as a backup.

Take a photo of yourself

Because Freja will become your digital document, your photo needs to be appropriate. Make sure that your face is clearly visible, just like for any ID photo.

You can try as many times as you like if you are not happy with your final photo.

How to take a proper photo

Here are some tips for taking a photo for Freja

  • Make sure that the lighting is good
  • Make sure that your face is clearly visible
  • Stand in front of a white background
  • Take off any hats or other headgear (religious clothing such as a hijab is fine)
  • Please take off your sunglasses

Frequent questions we get about the photo in Freja:

Can I change my photo in the future?

Yes, you won’t be stuck with the same photo if you’re not happy with it.

To change it, go to Settings > Manage Account > Change Photo.

Choosing Your Country

Freja is primarily a Swedish e-ID and is currently being developed primarily for use in Sweden and for Swedish e-services.

Swedish citizens i.e. people with a Swedish personnummer and Swedish ID documents will be able to use all of Freja’s features.

Freja does support registration for 52 more countries but only with a valid biometric passport. Freja’s functionality for these people will be limited.

If you have more than one citizenship/passport and are living and want to use Freja in Sweden, again choose Sweden and the Swedish passport.

IMPORTANT! If you are a Swedish citizen living abroad please register with your Swedish passport.

Choosing Which ID Document to Use

We recommend you use your biometric passport or Swedish national ID for registration in Freja.

The process is more secure, and it enables us to grant you Freja+ immediately if you pass all security checks.

Freja+ is the highest level of security in Freja, and grants you access to government e-services.

If you use another ID document e.g. your driving licence or you don’t pass all security checks, you can still get Freja+ but it requires an additional step. You will need to visit one of our agents to do a quick in-person security check, after which you will be granted Freja+.

If you are not a Swedish citizen, and your country is supported in Freja, you must use your biometric passport.

When it comes to who is eligible to have Freja/Freja+ based on country/citizenship etc., we have a separate page with all the details as the topic is too large to cover here.

The Swedish passport is considered a biometric ID document. Using it for registration will grant you Freja+ without needing to go through a security meeting with us.

Prepare for scanning

Instead of adding all of your data manually to the app, use Freja to scan your ID document. Here’s how to prepare:

  1. Read the instructions on the screen carefully
  2. Make sure there is enough light
  3. When you are ready tap ‘Start’
  4. You may need to give Freja access to your camera.

Initial scan

  1. Open your passport to the page with your photo and personal information
  2. Place your open passport on a solid surface and hold it open
  3. Fit the shape of your passport into the frame in the app. There are smaller indicators that will help you fit your passport into the frame
  4. Make sure you’re not covering your photo or other important information with your fingers

Scanning the NFC Chip

This works when your phone and the chip located inside your biometric passport communicate. In order for this to happen, your phone and passport must physically touch.

Follow these steps to scan the NFC chip from your passport:

  1. Tap the ‘Start’ button to begin the process;
  2. Put your phone directly onto your closed passport;
  3. Wait for scanning to begin and then hold still until it finishes;
  4. If nothing happens, drag the device slowly downwards to catch the signal.

Check that all of the data is correct

Now you can double check that all of your personal data checks out.

If anything is wrong, you can correct it.

Final security check

We need to make sure that you are actively choosing to get Freja.

This takes only a few moments.

The Swedish National ID is considered a biometric ID document. Using it for registration will grant you Freja+ without needing to go through a security meeting with us.

How to get Freja+

There are 2 main ways of getting Freja+:

  1. Completing your registration with a Swedish passport or national ID card  – you will get Freja+ straight away if you pass all security checks.
  2. Completing your registration with another type of ID document and then visiting one of our agents for a quick in-person security check.

Instructions for people using a non-biometric ID

You will need to visit one of our agents for a quick, in-person security check. This meeting is required by Swedish law.

Here is what you need to do:

  1. Tap the Freja+ action on Freja’s home screen.
  2. You will see information about Freja+, and instructions on how to find a Freja agent for your security check.

When you get to the agent

Make sure your bring your phone with Freja and the same ID document that you used to register (most likely your driving licence).

The agent will need to scan a QR code that can only be reached through the Freja+ card on your home screen.

IMPORTANT! This QR code is NOT the same as the QR code in your digital ID card.

Follow these instructions:

  1. Find the ATG counter
  2. Open the QR code in Freja
  3. Ask the agent to scan your QR code with an ATG scanner
  4. Show them your ID document

After your security meeting

For regulatory reasons it takes 3 hours for the change to be processed by our system. We will send you a message when everything is done. Meanwhile, you can use Freja normally.

You can skip the physical meeting by registering with your Swedish passport or National ID.

Frequent questions we get about Freja+:

I used my passport/national ID card but I didn’t get Freja+, what happened?

This means that we were not able to verify your identity to a satisfactory degree for you to get Freja+ immediately, despite using your passport/national ID card.

You can still get Freja+ though, please refer to the step described above regarding in-person verification.

Freja+ requirements for foreign citizens in Sweden

You need to fulfil the following criteria:

  • Have a biometric passport and are a citizen of an EU/EEA country;
  • Have a confirmed level of identity with the Swedish Tax Agency (for more details please refer to their page)
  • Have an address registered in SPAR that we mail to.

How to get Freja+ with a coordination no.

If you are eligible to get Freja+ and fulfil the criteria above, you will see an action card on your home screen telling you that you can get Freja+ with your coordination no.

Follow the steps in the app, making sure that the registered address in SPAR is correct.

We will send a letter to you with a security code that you will need to enter into Freja. By entering this security code you will activate Freja+ for yourself.

Frequent questions we get about Freja+ with the coordination no.:

I don’t see the Freja+ card on my home screen, what’s happening?

Your country is not eligible for upgrading to Freja+. Don’t worry, we expect more countries to open up in the future.

How long does it take for the letter to arrive?

If your address is in Sweden, a couple of days. Internationally, expect to wait longer.

I got Freja+ but I still can’t use it for certain services.

Unfortunately, it is up to the service itself to decide when they will allow foreign citizens to access their e-services.
