The Swedish Gambling Authority connects the E-identification service Freja eID to its national service Spelpaus.se. On the website, players can choose to turn off gambling for money and not to receive marketing from gaming companies using their e-ID.

From January 1, 2019, the Gaming Inspectorate (Spelinspektionen) is responsible for a national self-shutdown system where players can choose to turn off themselves from all registered games for money for a limited time, or until further notice. All gambling companies that from January 1, 2019 have a Swedish license to offer games for money must, before play, check against Spelpaus.se if the player has chosen self-shutdown. The website is run by Nethouse Sverige AB and the integration with Freja eID is carried out by Svensk e-Identitet AB.

The new law for gambling, which came into effect on January 1, 2019, will among other things protect players against excessive gambling and, if necessary, help them reduce their gambling. Part of the new so-called Duty of Care (Omsorgsplikten) is that a player should be able to turn himself off from playing for money for a certain period or until further notice.

Freja eID is an e-ID available in three trust levels where the highest Freja eID+ is approved for the governmental quality mark “Svensk e-legitimation”. For access to Spelpaus.se, the user must have Freja eID+.

Johan Henrikson, CEO Verisec comments:
“We are constantly seeing new areas of application for e-identification in step with society’s rapid digitization. For many services – such as Spelpaus.se – secured identities are an absolute basic requirement in order to be able to deliver the service at all. The same goes for the almost 100 game licenses that’s been applied for, where the new game law requires the gaming companies to register their users with an e-ID. That Freja eID can be part of the infrastructure that emerges in the new gaming landscape is therefore a natural development and it is none the least pleasing that we can contribute with a tool that helps individuals to keep their gambling under control.”
