Let’s clear up the terminology first. Liveness is a security measure that helps prevent fraudsters from taking advantage of biometric security measures. Even more simply, imagine somebody using a picture of you to unlock your phone with Face ID (or its Android equivalent). Modern devices are armed with ever-increasing security measures to combat this, and liveness is one of the most important ones. So why is this important in the context of Freja eID?
Freja eID – your personal eID
When you add a document to Freja eID, a personal eID will be generated from your data. You may use this personal eID to identify yourself to people in a multitude of ways – you can share your data via a link or a message, you can let somebody else scan your data so they can identify who you are. What we want to focus on now though, is being able to just show the screen of your personal eID to identify yourself.
When you unlock your personal eID, you can see some of the data that you added to Freja eID, such as your image or your name and age. In everyday life, such as proving your age at the store, or your identity when picking up a package, this is more than enough to prove who you really are. Only, you are doing with Freja eID, instead of having to take your driving licence out of your wallet.
Why liveness matters
When you open your personal eID, tapping the screen will cause an animation effect and a sound. These measures render screenshots, image manipulation or outright fake images impossible to use to fake an identity in Freja eID.
