Few things in life give you as much freedom as having a driver’s licence. Here you will find some important things to consider when it comes to planning your driving lessons – both for you who need learn to drive, and for parents!

1. Get a Driver’s Permit

You can easily get this permit via the Transportstyrelsen e-services. This service can be accessed easily with Freja eID+. This permit is valid for 5 years, so there are no drawbacks to getting it as soon as possible.

2. Get Your Eyes Checked at Once

If you wait too long to complete your eye check, your application to Transportstyrelsen may be invalid. So when you apply for your permit, go and complete your eye check at once.

All you need to do is to go to an approved optician, show your ID – e.g. your digital ID card in Freja – and the optician will send the sight test to Transportstyrelsen.

3. Make Sure Your Supervisor Has Their Permit

If you’re going to learn to drive privately, whoever is going to be teaching you e.g. your parent, must get a supervisor’s permit from Transportstyrelsen. Again, this is done through their e-service that can be easily accessed with Freja eID+. Your supervisor must also take a course at a traffic school. This course is taken once and takes a few hours.

Even if you’re getting your driver’s licence through a driving school, it’s a good idea for one of your parents to get a supervisor’s permit regardless. Many people who start practicing driving at a school often wish to practice more outside of school and want to go driving with their family. That’s why it’s a good idea to put in the few hours required to get the supervisor’s permit.

4. Automatic or Manual Transmission?

For many, the biggest question is whether to get a driver’s license for an automatic or manual transmission. Nowadays, most cars have automatic transmissions, so that is a safe option. But if you want to be absolutely sure that you’re covering all your bases, you should go for manual transmission.

One tip is to get a driver’s licence for automatic transmission. This will save you a lot of time, because it takes many lessons just to learn how to operate a manual car.

Then, once you have had your automatic driver’s license for a few months, and feel safe and comfortable in traffic, you take a few lessons with a manual transmission and start driving again. Those who do this way spend a lot less time overall getting their driver’s license.

5. Book Your Test Time Slot on Time

The queues to book your time slot for your driving test can be quite long. If you book your time slot well in advance you will be motivated to plan your exam and practice accordingly. This will also alleviate the stress of waiting to book your driving test for when you feel you are ready.

Also make sure to book both the theoretical and practical driving tests at the same time. Follow this link to Transportstyrelsen’s booking e-service.
