For those of you moving to Sweden, Freja is a great tool that can help you along in that process such as applying for residence permits and registering your move to the country.
In this article, we describe some of the most important e-services to be aware of if you are moving to Sweden.
Do a Digital Passport Check
When applying for a residence permit to work or study in Sweden, the Swedish Migration Agency normally requires a personal visit to a Swedish mission, such as an embassy, for a passport check. However, if you meet certain conditions, you can perform this passport check digitally with Freja, without making a physical visit if you:
- have applied for a residence permit for work or studies in Sweden during 2024;
- have submitted an online application;
- are a citizen of one of the 22 visa-exempt countries or territories included in the pilot project;
- do not have accompanying children under 5 years old.
On the Migration Agency’s website, you can read more about the process and which countries are included in the digital passport check.
Register Your Move to Sweden
If you intend to live in Sweden for at least one year, generally you must be registered in the population register. By registering, you will receive a personal identity number (personnummer), which is essential for accessing public services and for other practical matters in Sweden. First you need to submit an online notification to the Swedish Tax Agency and then undergo a physical identity check at one of the government service centers.
You can do the online registration with the Tax Agency using Freja, and you can find more information on how to proceed on their website.
Apply for Coordination Number
A coordination number is an identification number used for individuals who are not registered in the population register and therefore do not have a personal identity number. You can apply for a coordination number if you will be living in Sweden for less than a year or if you have some connection to Sweden that necessitates a coordination number.
You can apply for a coordination number through an e-service with the Swedish Tax Agency using Freja. Afterwards, you must undergo a physical identity check at one of the government service centers. Learn more about coordination numbers on the Tax Agency’s website.
